To understand why Ireland was partitioned you have to understand Home Rule. This idea dominated the late 19th and early 20th century in Ireland. It divided many in Ireland. There were those who wanted it. Those who opposed it and those who wanted much more than Home Rule. It would lead to increasing tension and ultimately conflict.
