This key section covers the Summer of '69 and the onset of the Troubles. It looks over the escalating tensions which caused mayhem  in Northern Ireland over the summer. It analyses why British Troops were sent to Northern Ireland and the effect it had.  It also looks at political responses to the crisis and the emergence of the Provisional IRA following a split in the republican movement.  We show the growth of loyalism in response and analyse the army reaction to the violence and we ask the question was this responsible for even more violence. Finally we look at Internment; Bloody Sunday and Direct rule.

This section will cover the Summer of 1969 and the tensions that spilled on to the streets: It will investigate:
  • The increase in tension
  • The house burning in Belfast
  • The Battle of the Bogside
  • The introduction of the British army and the response of Catholics & Protestants
  • It will also cover the reemergence of the IRA

2) 1969: MILITARY & POLITICAL RESPONSES

This section will cover the political and military responses to the troubles. It will investigate:
  • The Downing Street Declaration and reactions to it.
  • The paramilitary reaction and split in the Republican movement into official and provisional IRA.
  • It will cover the growth in Loyalism
  • It will also cover the British army actions including the Falls road curfew.

This section will look at Faulkner and the Political reaction to 1969
It will investigate:
  • The reasoning behind internment and explanations for its failures
  • It will explore the deepening splits in political parties in nationalism and unionism
  • The events behind Bloody Sunday and the reactions and implications of it.
  • It will look at Direct Rule- How it came about and its results
  • Finally it will look at Operation Motorman and its results
